Boy Hospitalized After Swallowing Fake Tongue Ring

Health authorities have issued an advisory warning about fake tongue rings after a 13-year-old New York boy swallowed one and is now facing surgery to have it removed.

The magnetic tongue rings are designed to mimic real tongue piercings, using small magnets to keep the metal pieces connected to the top and bottom of the tongue.

The magnets can cause damage to internal organs and intestines if swallowed, because the magnetic force pulls the pieces together inside the body. The metal in the tongue rings can also cause blood poisoning.

Doctors at a Brooklyn hospital may have to perform surgery to remove the metal pieces from the stomach of the 13-year-old boy, who accidentally swallowed them after a tongue ring was given to him by a classmate.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention had previously issued a warning to parents about the dangers of faux tongue-rings in 2006.

$150 Billion Awarded in Wrongful Death Suit

The case was brought in Fayette County District Court against Don Wilburn Collins, who was found liable, but was never prosecuted, for attacking 8-year-old Robbie Middleton.

The jury awarded Middleton's family $150 billion in punitive damages and $370 million in actual damages on Tuesday.

Collins is currently serving a prison sentence for aggravated sexual assault of a different 8-year-old boy and will be eligible for parole in September 2011.

After sexually assaulting Middleton on his birthday, Collins tied him to a tree, drenched him in gasoline and set him on fire, resulting in burns to over 99 percent of his body.

Montgomery County prosecutors initially charged Collins with one count of injury to a child, but later dropped the charge because of a lack of evidence.

BP Agrees to Pay $50 Million Over Pollution Violations

British Petroleum has agreed to pay the state of Texas $50 million to settle allegations of air pollution over a 2005 explosion at its Texas City refinery, according to a statement by the state's Attorney General.

The office of Attorney General Greg Abbott released a statement on Thursday that said the settlement will resolve all claims against the oil company alleged in a 2009 enforcement action.

The settlement does not acknowledge liability on the part of BP, but provides for a $50 million payment to the state to avoid any future litigation.

BP was accused of 72 safety violations over the 2005 explosion, which killed 15 workers and injured over 170 others.

Company to Pay $1.3M Over Toxic Toy

A company has agreed to pay a $1.3 million fine over the sale of a toxic toy that put two children in a coma, according to an announcement by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) on Thursday.

Spin Master Inc of Los Angeles and Spin Master Ltd of Toronto have agreed to the settlement after allegedly failing to report that its Aqua Dots craft kit was hazardous if swallowed.

According to the CPSC statement, the company denies having "knowingly" violated federal law by importing the banned hazardous substance in Aqua Dots, a product that was made up of tiny beads that stuck together when mixed with water.

The company had received reports as early as mid-October of 2007 that children had fallen ill after swallowing Aqua Dots and that the toy contained the banned hazardous substance 1,4-butylene glycol (TMG), which is toxic when ingested, the statement said.

The defective toy was not recalled, however, until November 2007, when two children fell into comas after swallowing the product.

Jury Deliberates Over $700M 'Light' Cigarette Verdict

A jury in Missouri is deliberating over whether smokers of "light" cigarettes should receive $700 million from Philip Morris for mislabeling its Marlboro Light brand as having "lower tar and nicotine" than regular cigarettes.

The verdict was handed down in a class-action lawsuit, which blames the tobacco giant of deceiving Missouri smokers by touting its light cigarettes as safer than regular cigarettes when, in fact, they often contained exactly the same amount of tobacco, tar and nicotine.

An attorney for the Plaintiffs argued that a "reasonable consumer" could be expected to purchase Marlboro Lights based on the label's promise that they were safer than regular cigarettes, he said.

The jury began its deliberations on Monday after lawyers on both sides made their final arguments.

Philip Morris stopped labeling its light cigarettes as containing "lower tar and nicotine" in 2003 and stopped using the word "lights" altogether in 2010.
