Woman killed in Coral Springs on Sawgrass Expressway

According to the Sun Sentinel, a Miami-Dade County woman was struck and killed by two cars on the Sawgrass Expressway in Coral Springs after her car had a flat tire. This scenario depicts the dangers drivers face when they are stranded on a highway roadside.
The Florida Highway Patrol states that there are steps motorists can take to stay safe.
After a crash or flat tire, the best thing for a motorist to do is to pull over to the shoulder as far away as possible from oncoming traffic and stand away from the car, with the emergency flashers on. Drivers who have cell phones should contact *FHP for help. Otherwise, call boxes are available.
The instincts of many drivers would be to stay in their car after a crash. However, it may be safer to stand outside and away from the car off to the shoulder, paying close attention to oncoming traffic.
