Seat Belt Safety Questioned by Some Teens after 3 people were killed in Coral Springs Canal Accident

After last month’s auto accident in Coral Springs, where a vehicle containing 4 teenagers fell upside down into a canal, there are some teenage drivers who question whether seat belts lower their chances of surviving a car accident involving any body of water. Three of the four teenagers inside the vehicle were wearing seatbelts and drowned. The fourth occupant was not wearing his seatbelt and survived as he was able to climb out of the car.

Police say the crash should not discourage teens from wearing their seat belts and further state that drivers/riders should keep their seat belts

There is only a small percentage of auto accident fatalities which involve people driving into bodies of water despite the fact that many streets and highways in South Florida are bordered by canals.
