Victims of a forced sterilization program in North Carolina may receive $50,000 each in compensation, according to a governor’s task force announcement on Tuesday.

The program, which was administered by the North Carolina Eugenics Board from 1929 to 1974, forced 7,600 poor, uneducated and mentally ill women to undergo an irreversible sterilization procedure.

The 2,000 victims who are alive today may receive as much as $50,000 each from the state.

A legislative committee will be formed by North Carolina House Speaker Thom Tillis to discuss the settlement prior to the expected vote on the bill in May.
