Red Light Runners and Auto Accidents

According to the Miami Herald, Hialeah Gardens is close to using red-light cameras

Hialeah Gardens is currently discussing plans for a program that will allow the police department to monitor several streets using traffic cameras.

If the plan goes through, Hialeah Gardens will join a growing list of cities throughout Miami-Dade and Broward counties that use cameras to catch red-light runners.

Police Chief Van Toth said the department’s research on West Okeechobee Road, Northwest 103rd Street, and Hialeah Gardens Boulevard shows a high number of car accidents and deaths.

”So we’re looking at safety issues, and this is a way those areas can be addressed and safety can be enforced with minimal personnel,” Toth said.

He added that the use of minimal personnel is a plus during the country’s currently rough economic times.

Other cities that already use cameras or are looking to do so include Aventura, Hialeah, Key Biscayne, Miami Gardens and Pembroke Pines.
