An unmarried teacher has filed suit against the Catholic Archdiocese of Cincinnati, claiming she was fired because she became pregnant through artificial insemination.

According to church officials, Christa Dias’ pregnancy was in violation of the employment contract she signed when she was hired as a teacher at Holy Family and St. Lawrence schools in East Price Hill, Ohio.

The official reason for Dias’ dismissal – that she was pregnant and unmarried – was later amended to include the immoral act of using artificial insemination procedures to become pregnant.

The lawsuit alleges that the archdiocese changed the official reason for her dismissal because it feared a gender discrimination lawsuit if her marital status was listed as the primary reason for her firing.

Dias, who now has a 10-month-old daughter and is still unemployed, claims that the church discriminated against her based on her gender because men who donate sperm are not nearly as likely to be fired as women, who cannot hide their pregnancies.
