Walmart announced on Thursday that it will be removing Enfamil baby formula from its store shelves while police in Missouri investigate the death of a baby who had been infected with a rare bacterium.

The suspect formula will be pulled from Walmart stores across the nation “out of an abundance of caution” after the death of a 10-day-old infant in Springfield, Missouri, on Sunday.

The baby had begun showing symptoms of bacterial meningitis on Friday, but doctors later discovered that he had contracted a rare bacterium called cronobacter sakazakii, which has been found in powdered infant formula in the past.

The potentially tainted products are 12.5-ounce cans of Enfamil Newborn formula with the lot number ZP1K7G.

The manufacturer of Enfamil said this week that it tested that particular batch of newborn formula and the results were negative for cronobacter sakazakii.
